Lima, or the spiny file clam, is a species of bivalve mollusca in the family Limidae

The shell of an adult Lima lima averages between 1 1/2 to 4 1/2 inches. The surface of the valves show 18-24 strong ribs covered with small scales. These clams are filter feeders.

Lima Lima shells are filter feeding, found under rocks on reef flats. They are free-swimming, moving by clapping the two shell valves rapidly and forcing water out. The red coloration is due to the pigment hemoglobin. When disturbed, their sticky (but harmless) tentacles attach onto the predators and break off.

Lima Limas dwell on rocky bottoms and coral, usually in the seagrass prairies of Posidonia oceanica, at depths up to 160 feet. They have been found world wide, in warm water seas
